One of the most singular museums the city of Matanzas treasures is the one devoted to the "batalla de ideas" (battle of ideas), the only one of its kind in Cuba and the world, which was inaugurated by Fidel Castro Ruz on July 14th, 2001 and it is located in the former Fire Station in Cárdenas, Matanzas.
The Battle of Ideas is a political action in defense of the breakthroughs of the Cuban Revolution as regards social justice and national integrity. It emerges from the struggle summoned by the Revolution, led by Fidel, to manage to bring the boy Elián González back to Cuba, who was kidnapped by the Miamian Mafia in November, 1999.
Go in and walk through it till you get to the overlook, considered to be the highest point in the city the public has access to.
The Museum for the Battle of Ideas has six exhibition halls on its first floor. The main one of them shows the struggle held by the Cuban people to bring the boy Elián González back to Cuba, event that brought about its emergence.
Although the institution has the mission of preserving, exhibiting and spreading the most valuable of the Battle of Ideas, it also works as a cultural complex. Hence its second floor offers places for lectures and the third one has a temporary exhibition hall for the works of artists from the locality and other regions.
