Africa in Cuba
Cuba and Africa are directly linked because of their history. In the middle of the Centro Histórico de La Habana you can find a place where you will be able to appreciate and understand the culture of this last region, a culture with a great influence in the history of this island of the Caribbean: La Casa de África.
This museum, unique in Cuba, possesses an extensive collection of African objects with more than two thousand pieces. Here you can find both alike, immense wooden statues and tiny pieces made of ivory. Among the collections we can highlight the ones about slavery, popular religiosity, wood and ivory statues, masks, textile and wardrobes, musical instruments, and finally the one of utensils knitted with vegetable fibers.
Among the services that this museum puts at your disposal we highlight the cultural activities, the guided visits and the diverse courses and workshops imparted by outstanding experts and investigators of the African and Afro-Cuban topic. Also, it has a specialized library that holds some of the most renowned authors and specialists in topics of cultural anthropology.
One of the added values of this museum is the place itself, a building built in the year 1887, which propitiates the unique experience of combining the African culture with the colonial environment of the Cuban XIX century.
It opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, and on Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
