Memorial José Martí: Monument to the Apostle
The José Martí Memorial, located in Havana, is the largest monument in the country dedicated to the National Hero of Cuba. The building is shaped like a five-pointed star (a symbol for the island’s sovereignty) and is covered with Cuban marble. Right in front of the building you can find a statue of Martí, which immediately draws your attention for its dazzling white marble and its huge dimensions (18 meters high).
The ground floor is a museum with a detailed exhibition about the Apostle’s life and works which is made up of images of some of his writings and pictures taken during his lifetime, as well as about important events that have taken place there after the Cuban Revolution. Another element to highlight in the interior of the structure is the Venetian ceramic mural that covers the base of the tower, on which there are 89 thoughts by José Martí written in 10-carat gold-plated letters. Also, at the top of the building there is an overlook that is considered to be the highest point in the city, from where you can get a panoramic view that goes as far as 50 kilometers.
This monument treasures memories that are crucial part of the nation’s history and culture. If you want to go into Cuba in more depth, make sure you pay it a visit.
