Guantánamo Stone Zoo

Guantánamo Stone Zoo, Guantánamo

Daily 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM

The province of Guantánamo, besides its natural treasures, holds a peculiarity: the only zoo of its kind in the world is found there. And the reason why it is unique is because all the animals that make it up are made of stone.

This unusual park has 426 limestone sculptures by countryman Ángel Íñigo Blanco and his son Ángel Íñigo Pérez. One of the things that undoubtedly draws more attention in this place is the level of detail and finish of the works, taking into account that both artists are completely self-taught.

There you will find elephants that are three meters high, lions, horses, and other animals from different parts of the world. You will also see scenes in stone that are shocking due to their realism, such as: the fight of aborigines against a wild boar, a huge snake fighting against a bull, lions devouring a buffalo, andmfarmers in their daily farm work, among others.

For their zoo, the sculptors chose an area with abundant vegetation and they took great care over each animal being sculpted taking into account its environment. That is why another stroke of genius in this zoo is that the sculpted species are found in places that resemble the habitat that would fit them… were they alive.
